3-ingredient Kalua pork (instant cooker or slow cooker)

Perfectly tender and juicy Kalua pig With the top smoky Hawaiian taste. It is simple to prepare in the instant or slow cooker and only takes 3 ingredients and 5 minutes to prepare!

Pork is an excellent type of meat to be slow cooked or pressure cooked. It turns out super tender and has tons of flavor. If I don't do this Hawaiian version, I usually do Grilled stuffed pork, sweet pork tacos or Slow cooker carnitas. Everything very tasty!

This kalua pork is a simple weekday dinner in our home. You only need 3 simple ingredients and almost no prep time (I'm talking 5 minutes). It can be made in an instant or slow cooker, which makes it SUPER moist and tender. Both red salt and liquid smoke give it an incredible Hawaiian flavor.

In addition, it is enough for my family to eat 2 meals. We usually finished the first night rice With backed vegetables. Then we like to stir a small the second night Barbecue sauce and serve in a creamy Hawaiian roll coleslaw. It's great too Frozen foods for busy weekday nights!

What is Kalua Pork

Kalua pig (also called kalua pig or luau pig) is a traditional Hawaiian dish that is served at luaus or large festivals. A whole pig is drunk with sea salt, banana leaves and koa wood in an underground oven called "imu". She smokes at least 8 hours, resulting in super moist and tender meat with a delicious smoky and salty taste.

This kalua pork recipe is an simple shortcut to mimicking the authentic Hawaiian version. If you cook the meat under pressure (or stew it slowly and slowly) it will become completely juicy and will literally melt in your mouth since it is so soft. It also has the same smoky taste that can easily be achieved by adding a spoonful of liquid smoke. No wood smoke needed in the oven or grill! Using liquid smoke is a great way to add a delicious smoke flavor with ease.

Type of pork

Make sure to obtain the pork shoulder roast. Butt roasting is a small more fatty and is great for slow / fast cooking. It becomes very delicate and crumbles when chopped. I usually use a 4 to 5 pound roast when making this recipe.

Cooking tips

  • The slow cooker or alert-made cooker. The top thing about this recipe is that it can be made in the instant or slow cooker. Both ways taste great so it's really up to you. Add the ingredients to the baking dish in the morning for an simple and hassle-free meal for dinner. Or if you're in a hurry, the instant pot method is a small faster.
  • Hawaiian sea salt. This is the traditional salt used for the calua pig. It has a red hue and is a small more salty than normal salt. You can find it at most grocery stores or buy it from Amazon.
  • Drill with a fork. Make sure to pierce the meat with a fork several times before cooking it. Holes in the fork help you obtain the taste of salt and smoke deep in the meat.
  • Do not remove the cover. Do not open the lid until 12 hours when cooking pork in the slow cooker. You need steam to soften it. It's low and slow.
  • Fragmentation. After the pork is cooked, use 2 forks to mince the meat. It should be very simple to disassemble because it's so soft and juicy. If the meat still looks a small difficult to chop, it will need to be cooked longer.
  • Come on, sit down. After chopping the meat, put it back in the saucepan with its water and let it rest for about 15 minutes. This extra step gives it an extra flavor boost.

Ways to serve Kalua pork

One of my favorite things about making this recipe is how versatile the meat is. It makes a lot of money so we usually have 2 meals a day. Soak up the first night with traditional side dishes like kale and rice, then use leftovers to make tacos. BBQ nachos, bacon or slider for the next day. There are so many ways to serve him!

Freezing + warming up

This recipe makes a great frozen meal! It was the Savior's blessings on many busy nights when I needed a fast dinner. To freeze, place the meat in a zip-lock freezer bag, making sure all of the air is removed. Store in the freezer Up to 3 months. If you want to try it, defrost it in the refrigerator overnight. I like to heat it up in the pan when it warms up. It gets a small crispy and tastes delicious!
