Making a homemade balsamic reduction is very simple and only requires 2 ingredients! Sticky, spicy and slightly sweet, great for salads or as a condiment.

It's no secret that I'm a enormous fan salad dressing and the other different spices. The balsamic reduction is one of my all time favorites because of this intense taste: tangy and slightly sweet, it gives everything from caprese salad to grilled chicken an incredible taste!

Necessary materials for producing the balsamic vinegar reduction

balsamic vinegar

There are a ton of balsamic vinegar options out there that are a bit confusing. Price tags can also vary widely; expensive balsamic vinegar bottles are usually aged longer (one), gives a more syrupy texture and a sweeter taste (2 ..).

Good news? You can skip the expensive vinegar and still obtain an absolutely delicious balsamic reduction. I used Modena's balsamic vinegar in the photos above, so it's from the Modena region of Italy … and costs $ 5 for a bottle.

You should add a sweetener to balance out the sharpness of the reduced vinegar. I used maple syrup in this recipe, but you can trade it in for equal amounts of honey or brown sugar.

You can also play with how much sweetener you add to reduce it. I've scaled it down a small from commercial balsamic glazes, but you can play with how much you add.

Step by step instructions

Cook the balsamic reduction in the blue saucepan

1. Merge- Put 2 cups of balsamic vinegar and one cup of maple syrup in the 4 liter saucepan. Cook lightly.

Add the balsamic reduction to the pot with a spoon; slightly thickened

2. Cook it slowly– Reduce the heat and let it boil. Stir occasionally with a spatula and simmer for another 20-30 minutes. Liquid & frac13; If it's low ½ check to see if it covers a spoon.

3. cold Once the mixture covers a spoon (as shown above) it is alert to arrive out of the fire. Wait for it to cool and then save it.

Recipe tips

Use your hood fan

Balsamic vinegar has a very strong scent and becomes more intense as it fades. Make sure your pot is boiling under a hood fan and high, or at least near an open window.

It gets thicker as it cools down

If your downsizing is covering your spoon like the photos above but still looks slender, don't be scared. As it cools, it becomes thick and syrupy.

Set the cooking time

You may need to adjust the cooking time depending on how much balsamic vinegar you commence with. Half batches decrease faster and doubling the recipe requires a longer cooking time. It is also possible that your vinegar has a different consistency. Take a look at this by adjusting the cooking time as needed.

How long does the balsamic reduction take?

Since the basis of this recipe is strongly acidic vinegar, this balsamic vinegar reduction will last a long time! We kept ours in the refrigerator for a month with no problem.

Can i do it with honey

Brown sugar? Yes and yes! Replace the maple syrup with an equal amount of sweetener.

What if I like a sweeter balsamic reduction?

This recipe is a bit cute, but definitely not as cute as a store-bought one. If you want it sweeter, you can increase the maple syrup to 1 cup or even 1 1 cup!
