What is Y2k Mode?

The Y2k fashion first became popular in the late 90s and early 2000s. The name arose from the idea that computers could no longer process data after December 31, 1999. The origins of the style were characterized by a digital / cyber look due to technological advances such as cell phones and video games. The most common colors were silver, black, chrome, and bright orange.

It's important to note that the Y2k fashion aesthetic has been heavily influenced by the black community, especially people like Aaliyah, TLC, Rihanna, Miss Teeq, Blaque, Brandi and Monica, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, and Naomi. But for that they were called ghetto and worthless. It gained more acceptance in the mid-2000s when celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears started dressing like this.

Y2k's aesthetic is very different today and only picks up on the main trends of the 2000s. Some aesthetics that can be confused with Y2k are indie and soft girl aesthetics as they are pretty similar.

How to style Y2k fashion:

Bright colors

Y2k usually contains light dark colors like pink. Other colors like blue, red and green are also very worn. Clothing is usually one color, so only one color.

Low waist and wide jeans

High-waisted jeans generally weren't a thing in the 2000s. So, if you are really into this style, it is a good idea to go shopping for low-top jeans. Slack jeans were also very worn out so you could sometimes commute them.

Oversized jackets

If you prefer a street style look, have a set of oversized jackets in your closet. From items like fur to racing jackets.

Casual clothes that you don't use have become very fashionable, so people wear tracksuits more. Usually, as we discussed earlier, light colors were pink and blue.

Paris Hilton once said: "The skirt should be the size of a belt. Life is short, take risks." As fashion icons of the 2000s, you should definitely follow his advice.
