Should bananas look like banana bread?

You should always use ripe bananas (with brown spots) for banana bread. NEVER use yellow / green bananas. A soft banana is also very simple to shred and helps the bread to be super moist. The browner the banana, the sweeter it tastes.

I love making banana bread when my bananas are at a similar stage to the two pictures above. You can turn the stem black, but you don't want to just use an all black banana with a spoiled interior. We're too impatient to let the bananas go completely dark so the first photo is usually the scene we add.

Ways to ripen bananas quickly

Here are some ways you can quickly ripen your bananas if you don't have ripe bananas in your store.

  1. Place your bananas in a brown bag for 12-24 hours. Adding a ripe apple (or other fruit) will make the process faster.
  2. You can cook your bananas at 350 ° F for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  3. You can also use your bananas in the microwave (30 seconds – 1 minute). Wait for it to cool before adding it to the bread.
