Content notes

  • rice– Use long grain white rice. Personally, I like to use Basmati because it has a low glycemic index. You can also replace it with jasmine or American long grain rice by adjusting the liquids as needed (depending on the packaging). If you are using long grain brown rice you will need to commute the cooking time accordingly.
  • liquid oil– I used coconut oil which helps soften and soften the rice. You can trade it in for butter.
  • Lemon peel- The rice adds the great amount of light citrus flavor without making it sour. I like to use organic lemon in seasoning and brush the peel well before I season it.
  • Dried herbs– Basil and thyme give rice a kind dimension of flavor. If you want to replace it with fresh basil or thyme, use a full tablespoon of each (add the basil just before serving).
  • Cooking liquid– You can use water or swap the broth for a tastier rice.

Recipe tips

Rinse the rice

Rinsing your rice will help remove excess starch from the surface of the rice, making each grain kind and fluffy. There are two ways to rinse: 1) use a colander and rinse under tap water or 2) BEST – add rice to the saucepan, cover with water, stir, gently drain the water and repeat Process until the water runs clear.

Always rest the rice

Another important step in achieving that great, fluffy rice texture is to let it sit (without looking!) After it's cooked. This ensures that the moisture is evenly distributed throughout the pot. After thorough cooking, place the rice pan in a cold burner and do not remove the lid for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork after 10 minutes and enjoy!

If you are using a rice cooker, rest time must be included in the cooking cycle so it is not required.

Storage + warming up

If handled improperly, rice runs the risk of developing harmful bacteria that can make you sick. If you follow the steps below everything will be fine:

  • Put it in the refrigerator within 2 hours – don't keep it at room temperature for too long as this is the temperature at which harmful bacteria can grow
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days
  • Heat until the heat has evaporated
  • Do not heat more than once
