Instant Pot 101: A Beginner's Guide


How to use Instant Pot – a step-by-step guide to walk you through everything you need to cognize about using your modern Instant Pot!

Instant pot was absolutely indispensable in my cooking routine. It is known that I use mine three times a day both for the preparation of dishes, and cook individual ingredients. If you have a brand modern instant pot or are wondering if you should buy one, this article will walk you through everything you need to cognize.

Why Buy Instant Pots?

For me it's all about convenience:

  • can cook food faster (although "instant" is not necessary as you think)
  • Eliminates the need to mix your food or babysitting
  • can help reduce your electricity bill
  • A dish that produces less food is great for eating
  • You can cook frozen meat (unlike a slow cooker)

Which instant pot should I buy?

I can only recommend the standard 7-in-1 instant pot duo models.

I have two of them (6 and 8 liters). There are many instant pot models out there, but I'm not going to go into everyone's nitrite courage (Here is a very detailed post explicate them all). Here is a brief summary of the models:

luxury– The most simple instant container model with 6-in-1 functionality. This means that it has the function of six kitchen appliances: pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, roast and food warmer

duet– It's a 7-in-1 model added to yogurt making.

Duo Plus– In addition to the 7-in-1 model, it is a 9-in-1 model like all functions of the egg cooker and disinfectant. This can be useful if you bottle-feed the baby.

Ultra– Includes all kinds of bells and whistles, including LCD touch screen, height settings and a steam release button (instead of a button). This model offers the ability to create custom changes that instant pot pros might like, but instant pot can be confusing for beginners.

Mini against 6 against 8 liters

Once you've chosen the right instant pot model, the next choice is size.

  • 6 liter instant pot– – that's what I use every day. At least 1 glass of water is required to obtain into the press and it is the great amount for my family of four
  • 8 liter instant pot– Make a large party. You need at least 1.5 cups of water for pressing. So when you cook rice, you need to cook at least 1.5 cups of dry rice. This can be too much for the average family. Ideal for soup, beans, broth and whole chicken.

Water test

The first thing to do when you obtain a modern instant pot is a water test.

It is good to do a water test because:

  • helps you practice with your instant pot without the stress of eating there
  • It helps determine if there are problems with your instant pot

  1. Pour 3 cups of water into the inner pot and place the inner pot on the instant pan base
  2. Examine the cap and make sure the silicone ring fits evenly around the cap

Rapid pressure relief

After the Ready Cup is cooked, you must release the pressure before opening the lid. A fast pressure relief is to release the pressure through the instant pot immediately after the fast cooking process is complete.

How to relieve pressure quickly:

  1. Use your hand or a spoon to gently move the steam release lever from the seal to the vent position. * Warning * When you let in steam, never put your face, hand or other objects on the valve.
  2. Sometimes steam flows through the valve for a few minutes.
  3. When all pressure is released, the pen drops. At this point it is secure to open the lid.

Natural pressure relief

A natural pressure relief is if you let the pressure drop slowly into the instant pot without detaching it from the steam valve itself. As soon as the cooking process is finished, your instant pot immediately switches to "keep warm". You can keep it warm or turn it off.

To relieve the natural pressure:

  1. Let go when the instant pot beeps after a cooking cycle. You can switch off "keep warm" or keep warm.
  2. If the pen falls, the cover can be opened safely.

Natural pressure relief is often used when food needs to rest to absorb the liquid, or when there is a large volume of liquid in the pot or when food is starchy – both run the risk of splashing out of the steam valve. Some recipes that require natural pressure relief:

I personally always release 10 minutes of natural pressure relief for soups or other large-volume recipes cooked in soup.

What are all these buttons doing ?!

Your instant pot has a TONE button and you can experiment with it, but I personally only use two buttons:

  • Pressure cooker (called "manual" on older models) – This is the fast cooking program. Press the button and set the clock using the "+" and "-" buttons.
  • Fry– It warms the pot and is great for recipes where meat or flavors need to be browned to create flavor. Make sure that the pan is properly cleaned to avoid a flaming warning being displayed when cooking quickly.

Other important instant pot tips

  • Your instant pot cover can be hung in rectangular holes in the edge and held upright
  • You need at least 1 cup of liquid. 6 liter instant pot one for printing and 1 1/2 cups 8 liter instant pot make pressure
  • A good general rule is to fill your instant pot no more than 2/3 full
  • BUT if you're cooking expanding foods like rice or beans, don't fill your instant pot more than 1/2 full
  • Use your instant pot in an open area as there may be too much steam when releasing the pressure
  • Note that entry into the press takes 5-25 minutes (depending on the volume in the pot). So it doesn't boil right away, but keep in mind that it frees your hands so you can do other things.
