The thing is, there are so many "one size fits all" instant pot sweet potato recipes, and can we be genuine? Not all sweet potatoes are the same. Why should the cooking method be like this?

After getting frustrated with undercooked sweet potatoes, I started testing dozens of sweet potatoes until I found a formula that would give you great sweet potatoes.

Measure the width of your sweet potatoes

In my experience, I have found that the cooking time of your sweet potatoes depends entirely on the width of your sweet potatoes.

After testing dozens of sweet potatoes, I found the following formula:

  • small (2 inches or less width): 15 minutes + 10 minutes of natural pressure relief
  • middle (2-3 inch width): 30 minutes + 10 minutes of natural pressure relief
  • large (3-4 inch width): 60 minutes * + 10 minutes of natural pressure relief

* Frankly, depending on what you use these colossal sweet potatoes for, it's probably better to dice them for faster cooking

How to cook sweet potatoes in the instant pot

There are a few simple steps between you and your great sweet potatoes:

  1. Measure (or guess) the width of your sweet potatoes
  2. Scrub sweet potatoes and dip 4-5 times with a fork
  3. Put 1 cup of water (or 1.5 cups for an 8 liter instant pot) in the instant pot and put the saucer on
  4. Arrange your sweet potatoes on coasters
  5. Put the lid on the instant pot and set the valve to "sealing". Fast cooking for the time specified on the recipe card according to the width of your sweet potatoes
  6. Release the pressure naturally for 10 minutes, then carefully release the remaining pressure

Which instant pot works top?

You can cook sweet potatoes in a 6 or 8 liter instant container without changing the cooking time. The only thing that varies between the two dimensions is the amount of water that you add to the pot.

Can I cook normal potatoes with these cooking times?

Can I stack sweet potatoes or should they be on one layer?

My tests were done on a single layer, but theoretically you should be able to accumulate them without additional cooking time. If you find that your sweet potatoes need additional cooking time, you can put the lid back on, add more time, and the pot is put back under pressure very quickly.

Is it better to use the "steam" or "manual" setting to cook sweet potatoes?

I did it either way and it worked either way. The steam setting boils at full power immediately, since it is assumed that there is only water in the instant pot and there is no risk of food burning in contact with the ground.

  • Measure or estimate the width of your sweet potatoes.

  • Rub in the sweet potatoes and then sew them 5-10 times with a fork.

  • Add 1 cup of water to a 6 liter instant cap or 1.5 cups to an 8 liter instant cap.

  • Place the coaster in the instant pot and arrange the sweet potatoes on the coaster.

  • Put the lid on the instant pot and set the valve to "seal".

  • Choose manually (or "fast cook" depending on the model) and set the timer based on the thickness of your sweet potatoes: small- Under 2 inches: 15 minutes middle– 2-3 inches: 30 minutes, large– 3-4 inches: 60 minutes.

  • If the timer beeps, release the pressure naturally for 10 minutes before releasing the rest of the pressure.

  • If for some reason your sweet potatoes are not fully cooked, put the lid back in the instant pot and add another 5-10 minutes. Your instant pot will quickly return for printing.
