Lost house of OFIS Architecture

Step Level House is a modern accommodation on the outskirts of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It was designed by the family house. OFFICE architects whose work Villa Criss-Cross envelope The project may seem familiar to you.

The house is located in a residential area on the border between the city middle and the suburb. Between the street level and part of the country there is a height difference of 2.5 m. According to the topography, the volume of the house was divided from the street to the garden level in stages. In this way you can create terraces with plants on each floor overlooking the trees in the backyard.

The client, a bilingual family (Slovene-English), asked for the welcome and welcome of the guest in the short design of two different living areas, one on the street level and the other on the lower floor of the garden for daily family life. In this way, the step geometry of the house is also reflected in the programmatic organization.

The ground floor is intended for guest gatherings and graduation activities, and the core of the interior is located on the lower floor, where the kitchen and living room are visually and spatially connected to the terrace and the garden. The first floor can accommodate family members. The second floor is designed as a loft for the guests. Each main activity is assigned a terrace.

The duality of functions is clearly expressed in the sections. On the one hand there is a typical collection of floors in a single family home, while on the other hand the rooms in the garage and on the terraces divide the building into two parts, while the back gardens visually connect the various terraces of the house. and the main entrance from the street.

The resulting volume is wrapped in a perforated brick fabric on open facades and concealed in a latticed street, with an open, glazed back to several private garden levels.

Sustainable solutions:
Heat recovery ventilation system
Heat pump soil water
High-cooling system (mounted on concrete slabs)
two-layer thermal insulation
three-layered glass with wooden frame
glazed openings against sunlight (north vs. south)
the use of environmental external materials, which reduces any internal coating with exposed structural walls.
